I used to put together pregen characters for both Paranoia and Cyberpunk. All my experience with Vampire was as pregen characters who only lasted one or two sessions. I found it was easier to convince people to play if I had some compelling characters pre-rolled. People seemed to enjoy picking out characters from a pile of premade ones more than rolling their own, and I got to control what kind of characters were in the game.

Also, I think the McGuiver style of RolePlaying is the most fun you can have with dice. If they die, they get another character from the pile.

Am I the only person who's used pregen characters in a real campaign?

I haven't listened yet, but pre-gens are a great way to break people out of their character ruts, and to build a cohesive group for any game, con or otherwise.

Especially for new, or problem players...it prevents the "I'm the ranger that never goes into town, and never talks to anyone including the other party members!!!!"

Looking forward to listening once I put the paddles on my PC and yell "clear!!!!"...

To be clear...

I definitely spoke out loudest against using pregens for campaigns and I hold to that. I just don't see how anyone could allow themselves to be handed a character and told to play it to a 'T' for the rest of an extended game... dozens of sessions in a row.

That said, there is of course the 'if you have fun, do it' rule... but I just can't wrap my head around not making my own character for a campaign

That's funny, because among my friends, we probably played 50% pregens, and everyone had a stack of characters for whatever game they were running in case someone wanted to sit in for one game, or just jump in without rolling.

In cyberpunk there was a section for 'fast and dirty expendables', and sometimes we'd give a new guy one of those to play for session, and if the character lived, we'd let him flesh the character out.

A friend of mine, this year, was the first person to tell me she thought that was really weird.
